After a move to a new city or neighborhood, there is a feeling of disorientation. These tips can help anyone moving to a new neighborhood or city, with absolutely no clue what to do first!

Inspect your home:

If you didn’t have enough time to thoroughly inspect the house as well as you wanted, complete a thorough inspection. Locate the water valve and fuse box and take down the readings for your water and electricity in case you need the information later on.

Acclimate the pet(s):

If you move with a pet(s), check on your furry friend to see how he/she is fairing with the change of scenery and climate. Clean the house thoroughly so that you get rid of odors their heightened sense of smell picks up. Make sure your pet(s) has a meal and exercise at their designated time to establish their routine did not change.

Change your address:

File a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The USPS will forward your mail for 12 months, which gives you time to notify your banks, credit card companies, and other contacts.

Secure your new home:

As soon as you move in, change the locks on all exterior doors. The previous occupants or service providers might still have a spare key. Test and change the batteries on all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Transfer utilities:

Contact your gas, water, electric, and internet providers to schedule service. To ensure there’s no lapse in service, arrange for your previous home’s utilities to be shut off the day after you leave and your new home’s to be turned on the day before you arrive.

Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration:

If you move to a different state, you must update your driver’s license and vehicle registration. The deadline varies by state, but some require it as soon as 30 days after establishing residency.

Register to vote:

Update your voter registration so you can participate in local, state, and federal elections. This can often be done when you update your driver’s license at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Explore your neighborhood on foot:

Walking or biking allows you to discover local shops, restaurants, and parks that you might miss in a car. Regular trips to the grocery store or a neighborhood cafe are also a great way to meet neighbors.

Join local groups and activities:

Look for clubs or organizations that align with your interests. This could include a book club, a running group, a volunteer organization, or an intramural sports team.

Find new healthcare providers:

Call your health insurance provider to find doctors, dentists, and other specialists who are in-network in your new city. You can also ask your previous doctors for referrals or use online resources to research options.

Introduce yourself to your neighbors:

Simply greeting your neighbors can help you feel more connected and provides a valuable local resource. They can offer tips on everything from finding a reliable handyman to navigating neighborhood trash and recycling rules.

Plan a housewarming get-together:

Once you’re unpacked, hosting a casual gathering is a great way to meet people and invite new friends into your home.
